Planning a trip to the Albanian Riviera? One thing that makes this stretch of coastline so special is that it’s a bit off the beaten path — which also means figuring out how to get around isn’t always super obvious.
Here’s a simple guide to help you choose the best way to explore, depending on your travel style and budget.
🚘 Renting a Car
If you want total freedom and plan to visit beaches, towns, and viewpoints at your own pace, renting a car is your best bet. The roads along the Riviera (especially the SH8 highway) are stunning, but full of curves and bends, so take your time — and don’t be surprised if goats cross the road every now and then.
- Good to know:
– Most cars are manual, so request automatic if needed.
– Parking is free at many beaches, but can be limited in peak season.
– A small car is easier to handle on narrow roads.
🚕 Taxis & Local Drivers
Taxis are available, but not always easy to hail on the spot. In smaller places like Palase or Dhermi, it’s best to book in advance or ask your host to arrange one.
You can also book transfers or hire a local driver for the day — it’s a more relaxed way to explore without worrying about parking or directions.
- Good to know:
– Prices vary, so ask for a quote before booking.
– Most drivers speak basic English. A lot speak very good Italian.
– Great option for groups.
🚌 Public Transport
There are minibuses (“furgons”) that connect major towns like Tirana, Vlore, Himare, and Sarande. They typically run on set routes and schedules, but timing can be … let’s say kind of flexible — so don’t be surprised if they’re a bit early, late or make a few extra stops along the way.
If you’re traveling light and flexible, it’s a budget-friendly way to get around — but it’s not the most reliable for day-to-day beach hopping.
- Good to know:
– Pay the driver in cash (in most cases).
– Schedules can be a bit loose, so ask locals or hosts for up-to-date info.
– Not ideal for travelers with lots of luggage or small kids.
🛵 Scooters & Motorbikes
Renting a scooter or motorbike is a fun, affordable way to get around — especially if you’re staying in one area like Dhermi or Himare and want to hop between beaches or viewpoints without the hassle of a car.
- Good to know:
– Rentals require a valid license (bring it with you otherwise you won’t be able to rent).
– Helmets are usually included (and 100% recommended!).
– Roads can be steep and curvy, so only rent if you’re confident driving.
🚲 Bicycles
Biking the Riviera is best for those up for a challenge — the roads are scenic but hilly! It’s a beautiful (and eco-friendly) way to explore if you’re staying local and enjoy a good workout.
- Good to know:
– Dedicated bike lanes are rare, so you’ll often be sharing the road with cars.
– Bring water and sun protection.
– Electric bikes are becoming more available.
🛥️ Boat Trips & Water Taxis
One of the best parts of the Riviera is what you can only see by boat. From Himare or Dhermi, you can book small boat tours to explore secret beaches, caves, and coves.
It’s also possible to get dropped off at certain beaches and picked up later — like a water taxi.
- Good to know:
– Most tours are private or semi-private
– Prices depend on the number of people and destinations
– Bring water, snacks, and sun protection
🧭 One Last Thing…
Things move a little … different around here sometimes — and that’s part of the charm. Give yourself extra time, ask locals if you’re unsure, and enjoy the ride. The views make every journey worth it.
