Things to Know Before You Visit Albania

Planning a trip to Albania? Here’s what to know before you go — from currency and transport to language tips and what to expect when you get there.

Planning a trip to Albania? Whether you’re heading for the beaches of the Riviera or exploring lively cities like Tirana or Shkodra, there are a few things that are helpful to know before you arrive. Here’s a quick guide to help you feel more prepared — and excited — for your visit.

💶 Currency & Payments

The official currency is the Albanian lek (ALL). In tourist areas, euros (€) are often accepted — especially for accommodations and some restaurants.

Cash is king in many places, especially in smaller towns and along the coast. Card payments are more common in cities, but it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand.

💡 Tip: ATMs are easy to find in cities and larger towns, but bring cash if you’re heading to more remote spots.

🚕 Transportation

Public transport is affordable but a bit unpredictable. Buses and minibuses (called furgons) connect most cities and towns, and while they do run on set schedules, they aren’t always 100% on time.

Renting a car is a great option if you want to explore freely — just be prepared for some winding mountain roads and… the occasional cow or goat. Navigation apps like Google Maps work well.

🗣️ Language

Albanian is the official language, but in touristy areas, you’ll find that many people speak English, especially younger folks. Italian is also quite common — a lot of Albanians have lived or worked in Italy, so don’t be surprised if someone switches between the two with ease.

A few Albanian phrases go a long way, though — and locals really appreciate the effort.

  • Hello – Përshëndetje
  • Thank you – Faleminderit
  • Yes / No – Po / Jo

📱 SIM Cards & Internet

Wi-Fi is widely available and generally reliable, even in smaller towns. If you’re staying longer or want to use data while exploring, consider getting a local SIM card — Vodafone and One are the main providers and offer tourist packages with plenty of data.

🍽️ Food, Water & Tipping

Food in Albania is delicious, fresh, and affordable. Expect lots of grilled meats, seafood, veggies, and homemade bread.

Tap water is safe in various areas, but not all. To be on the safe side, we recommend drinking bottled water — it’s widely available and inexpensive.

Tipping isn’t mandatory, but it’s appreciated — rounding up the bill or leaving 10% is a nice gesture.

💡 Power Outlets & Plugs

Albania uses Type C and F plugs (the standard European two-pin), and the voltage is 230V. If you’re coming from outside Europe, bring a universal adapter.

🧳 What to Pack

In summer, think light and breathable clothes — plus a hat and sunscreen. But even in warmer months, nights can be cooler, especially in the mountains, so bring a light jacket. And always pack a swimsuit — even if you think you won’t need it!

🛂 Entry Requirements

Many nationalities can enter Albania visa-free for up to 90 days — including most of Europe, the UK, the US, Canada, and Australia. Double-check based on your passport before traveling.

🧭 Embrace the Unexpected

Albania is full of little surprises — you might find ancient ruins just steps from a modern beach bar, or a bumpy rural road leading to the most stunning hidden cove. It’s a country where old and new sit side by side, and spontaneity is part of the charm.

If you ever need help, don’t worry — locals are famously warm and happy to assist, whether you’re asking for directions or looking for the best place to eat.

🌍 Sustainability & Respect

Tourism in Albania is growing quickly, and you can help keep things beautiful by being mindful:

  • Take your trash with you
  • Respect nature and wildlife
  • Support small, local businesses

Small actions make a big difference.
