Short answer: yes. Long answer: also yes — and here’s why.
If you’re planning a trip to Albania but feeling a little unsure, you’re not alone. While the country has been growing in popularity in recent years, it’s still under-the-radar for many travelers — and with that comes questions about safety.
We’ve been lucky enough to visit over 30 countries, and Albania? It’s genuinely one of the safest and most welcoming places we’ve been to.
🇦🇱 Crime: Low and Rarely Targeted at Tourists
Albania is generally a very safe country, with low crime rates — especially when it comes to violent crime. Petty theft is uncommon, and tourists aren’t typically targeted. Of course, it’s always smart to take standard precautions: keep an eye on your belongings in busy areas, lock your car, and all these other pretty basic things.
🙋 Solo and Female Travelers
Many women travel solo in Albania without issues. People are friendly and helpful, and street harassment is minimal compared to other destinations. As always, trust your instincts — but don’t be surprised if locals go out of their way to assist you or make sure you’re okay.
🚕 Scams and Tourist Traps
The good news? Scams aren’t really a thing here. You might occasionally pay a bit more for a taxi or meal in tourist hotspots, but there’s no culture of scamming visitors. Most people are genuinely happy you’re visiting and want you to have a good experience.
🚗 Driving & Roads
If there’s one area to be extra mindful, it’s driving. While main roads are improving fast, some routes are narrow, winding, or not super well-marked — especially in the mountains. Just take your time, drive during daylight hours if possible, and don’t be afraid to pull over and ask for directions. Locals are more than happy to help.
Also: watch out for animals on the road (yes, you might pass a herd of goats) and some enthusiastic local drivers.
🧡 People & Hospitality
Albanians are known for their hospitality — it’s not just a saying, it’s a way of life. Don’t be surprised if someone offers you a coffee, gives you directions or even invites you to their home. Many travelers leave with stories of unexpected kindness and help from total strangers.
🏥 Health & Emergencies
Pharmacies are easy to find, and doctors are available in most towns and cities. While you may not always find English-speaking staff, someone will usually jump in to help. For peace of mind, it’s still a good idea to travel with insurance.
Final Thoughts

So — is Albania safe to visit? Yes. It’s a beautiful, welcoming country that’s only just starting to get the attention it deserves. Come with an open mind, a little curiosity, and a willingness to slow down — and you’ll be just fine.
