đź“· View from Palasa View Apartments, located in Palase, offering stunning views of the coastline.
So, you’re dreaming of the Albanian Riviera – turquoise waters, stunning coastal drives, and sun-drenched days. Amazing choice! But now comes the tricky part: where should you actually stay? Three popular contenders often pop up: Dhermi, Palase and Himare.
While they’re relatively close neighbours along the spectacular SH8 coastal road, each offers a distinct vibe and serves different kinds of travellers. Let’s break down Dhermi vs. Palase vs. Himare to help you find your perfect spot on this incredible coastline.
📍 A Quick Intro to the Contenders
- Palase: Think insanely beautiful views, a touch of exclusivity, and proximity to the breathtaking Llogara Pass. It’s generally quieter, known for its newer developments (like modern apartments and villas) combined with older houses in the village, perched with incredible sea vistas.
- Dhermi: Often seen as the livelier sibling of Palase. Famous for its long pebble beach, bustling beach clubs and a charming old village up on the hill.
- Himare: A coastal town that feels more lived-in year-round.
🤔 Vibe & Atmosphere: What Are You Looking For?
- Palase: Serenity seekers, rejoice! Palase offers a more relaxed escape. It’s less about buzzing crowds and more about soaking in the views from your balcony. Perfect if you want peace after a day of exploring.
- Dhermi: Definitely has more energy, especially in peak season. Expect a younger crowd, music from beach bars, and a generally more vibrant (and sometimes noisy) atmosphere, particularly down by the main beach road.
- Himare: A small coastal town with a bit of everything — a walkable promenade, nearby beaches, and a mix of local and tourist-friendly spots. It’s a nice place to spend a day or two, especially if you want variety without venturing too far. Just keep in mind that the main road can get a little hectic in peak season, especially with cars and beachgoers moving through.
🏖️ Beaches: Sun, Sand & Pebbles
- Palase: The main Palase beach is long and beautiful, often less crowded than Dhermi. It’s primarily pebble but offers stunning clear water. You’re also super close to hopping over to Dhermi’s beaches.
- Dhermi: Offers variety. Dhermi beach itself is large, lined with restaurants and bars. Just next door is Drymades, known for its slightly sandier sections (though still largely pebbles).
- Himare: Boasts several beaches right in or near town – Spile (main town beach, sandier) and Potam. Livadhi beach is also very close. Great if you want easy beach access without driving far.
🍽️ Food & Nightlife: Dinner Dates & Drinks
- Palase: Generally quieter, with just a few restaurants and no late-night bars — perfect if you’re after peace and views. Want more buzz? The beach of DhĂ«rmi is less than a 10-minute drive away.
- Dhermi: The place for beach bars and clubs that go on later, especially during July and August. Plenty of restaurant choices along the beach and in the old town, ranging from casual to more upscale.
- Himare: Good selection of traditional tavernas, seafood restaurants, pizzerias, and cafes along the promenade and main streets. Nightlife is more about relaxed drinks at bars rather than booming clubs.
đźš— Activities & Convenience: Getting Around & Things to Do
- Palase: Its star attraction (besides the view!) is proximity to Llogara National Park for hiking and paragliding. It’s a fantastic starting point for driving the Riviera north-to-south. You’ll likely need a car for flexibility.
- Dhermi: Great base for boat trips to places like Gjipe Beach or the Karaburun Peninsula. The old town is worth exploring. A car is still recommended for exploring further.
- Himare: Being a larger town, it has more amenities (various supermarkets, ATMs, pharmacies, bus connections). Its location makes day trips south (to Porto Palermo, Qeparo, Borsh, even Saranda) relatively easier. Himare Castle is also an attraction.
🏆 The Verdict: Which Base is Best for You?
No matter where you choose, the Albanian Riviera is unforgettable! Each spot has its charm, and honestly, they’re close enough that you can easily visit the others on day (or even half-day) trips.
- Palasë to Dhërmi: ~5 km (less than 10 minutes by car)
- Dhërmi to Himarë: ~17 km (around 25–30 minutes by car)
- Palasë to Himarë: ~20 km (about 30–35 minutes by car)
If you only want to choose one, then we’d say:
- Choose Palase if: You crave stunning views, a quieter and often more modern stay (think lovely aparthotels), want easy access to Llogara Pass, and prefer relaxing evenings over buzzing nightlife. Ideal for couples or families seeking tranquility while still being close to the nightlife.
- Choose Dhermi if: You love lively beach scenes, enjoy beach clubs and some nightlife, want a variety of nearby beaches, and don’t mind the crowds. Popular with younger travellers and groups.
- Choose Himare if: You want a convenient town base with more amenities, prefer easier access to multiple beaches without always driving (depending on where exactly you are staying). Great for families and other travellers needing options.
