Planning a trip to Albania but not sure where to start? This 10-day itinerary takes you from the rugged mountains of the north to the sun-soaked beaches of the south — with castles, ancient ruins, and picture-perfect views along the way. Whether it’s your first time visiting or you’re looking to explore beyond the usual coastal spots, this route gives you a real taste of everything Albania has to offer.

✈️ Day 1: Arrive in Tirana

Welcome to Albania! Land in Tirana International Airport and settle into the capital. If you have energy left after your flight, take a walk around Skanderbeg Square, grab a coffee in the Blloku neighborhood, and soak in the vibe.

🏔️ Day 2: Tirana to Shkodër

Drive or take a bus north to Shkodër (about 2 hours). This charming northern city is known for its artistic soul, old Ottoman architecture, and laid-back vibe. Walk along the pedestrian street, visit Rozafa Castle for epic views, and relax by Lake Shkodër.

🌄 Day 3: Theth Adventure Begins

Today’s drive into the Albanian Alps is unforgettable. Head toward Theth National Park (a 2–3 hour drive on winding mountain roads). Once there, check into a cozy guesthouse and prepare for a full nature reset.

Tip: It’s best to have your own car or join a small group tour for this part.

🚶 Day 4: Hike the Theth Region

Wake up to fresh mountain air. Spend the day hiking to The Blue Eye of Theth or Grunas Waterfall, or just explore the village and take it slow. The scenery here is wild and peaceful — perfect for nature lovers.

🏰 Day 5: Road Trip to Gjirokastër

Make your way south to Gjirokastër (around 5 hours). This UNESCO World Heritage town is full of stone houses, narrow alleys, and beautiful views. Stay the night and enjoy a slow evening exploring.

🌊 Day 6: Head to the Albanian Riviera

Time for the coast! Drive toward Dhërmi or Palasë, stopping along the way for coffee or photos. You’ll be switching mountain views for sea views, and it’s just as breathtaking.

🏖️ Day 7: Beach Day Bliss

Spend the day exploring nearby beaches — like Drymades, Gjipe or Jale. If you’re up for a little adventure, hike or boat to a hidden cove. This area is peaceful, especially compared to busier beach towns.

Perfect for: Couples, nature lovers, photographers
Kid-friendly: Yes, though beaches can be rocky — water shoes help!

🚤 Day 8: Himarë or Boat Tour

Head further south to Himarë or take a boat tour to hidden beaches (like Aquarium Bay or Grama Bay). This day is all about enjoying the Ionian Sea — no rushing around.

🧭 Day 9: Ksamil, Butrint & Blue Eye

Make your way toward Sarandë and stop at:

  • Butrint National Park – a UNESCO site with ancient ruins
  • Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) – a surreal natural spring
  • Ksamil – white sand beaches and turquoise water (although auper busy in high season!)

This day is packed, but worth it. You can always skip Ksamil and spend more time in Butrint or Gjirokastër if you prefer history over beach bars.

✈️ Day 10: Return to Tirana

Depending on your flight, head back to Tirana (about 4–5 hours from Sarandë). Stop for lunch in Vlorë if you have time, or even spend the night back in the capital to end your trip with one last night out.

📝 Final Tips

  • Best travel season: Late May to early October—though keep in mind that some beach bars, restaurants, and boat tours may be closed or limited in May or October.
  • Transport: Renting a car gives you total freedom — highly recommended.
  • Pace: This itinerary is full but not frantic. Want to slow down? Turn it into a 2-week trip.

🌅 Where to Stay on the Riviera

If you want quiet, sweeping views, and easy access to all the southern beaches, Palasa View is a peaceful home base. You’ll need a car, but it’s worth it — nothing beats waking up to that view.
